Strengthening the Implementation of Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing regimes in Latin America and the Caribbean

This project aims to uphold the principles of conservation, sustainability, equity and justice of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with regard to access and benefit sharing (ABS) and the protection of traditional knowledge.

The overall objective is to strengthen the capacities of eight countries (Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama and Peru) to develop and/or comply with national policy and legal frameworks related to ABS.

This will be developed through case studies that will gather information and share results among the countries participating in the project. Moreover, existing guidelines and tools will be included.

Objective 1:

To strengthen the capacity of countries to develop, implement and apply the CBD provisions.

Objective 2:

To increase the understanding and the negotiation skills of countries regarding ABS agreements /contracts, in a way that will contribute the alignment of bio-prospecting projects and national ABS decisions with the CBD.
